Gençlerbirliği SK Corporate Identity Guideline

While preparing for its centennial, Gençlerbirliği SK is trying to complete its institutionalization process. Gençlerbirliği SK, which did not have a full corporate identity work until today, was preparing and using coats of arms to meet the needs of that day. This both caused confusion and caused the use of dozens of different coats of arms at the same time. That’s why I prepared a corporate identity guide for Gençlerbirliği SK. I am proud to contribute Gençlerbirliği SK’s this huge step institutionalization.

a Typeface to Suit Best: Montserrat

Montserrat is one of the most popular typefaces of all time. It is designed by Julieta Ulanovsky. It was inspired by posters, signs and painted windows from the first half of the twentieth century, seen in the historic Montserrat neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Since it has a large x-height, short descenders and wide apertures, Montserrat is highly legible even in small sizes. This legibility is extremely important for sports clubs, since they would need to use their coat of arms sometimes to draw it on a huge wall, and sometimes as a 110×110 pixels profile picture for their social media accounts. After tons of trial, we decided that Montserrat would suit best to the energy of Gençlerbirliği SK.

the Ultimate Monochrome

After identifying the first coat of arms of Gençlerbirliği SK, I also prepared its monochrome versions. The monochrome crests used by the club and the fans until now have had one common negative feature: when you make the logo monochrome, we lose the basic elements that make up the logo. That’s why I prepared two monochrome crests, one black and one gold, that can show all the elements of Gençlerbirliği SK’s logo with the same determination.

Vintage & Retro

Finally, I identified the first crest of Gençlerbirliği and the modernized retro version of this crest and made vector drawings. You can see the introduction of all these arms in the video in this section.

One Year Trial Period

Gençlerbirliği SK is a 100-year-old brand. You cannot do the corporate identity work of such a well-established brand in one day. Together with the club employees and the people who serve the club on these issues, we tried the elements of the new corporate identity work on different platforms for about a year. We discovered bugs, reworked, fixed bugs and put them back to trial. That is, until we prepare the most comprehensive and most suitable corporate identity guide to modern standards.
